YouTube video platform has paid out more than $1 billion to music - Tom Pickette

Google Inc. disclosed on Sunday that its YouTube video platform has paid out more than $1 billion to music rights holders "over the last several years," putting the California technology company among the top sources of digital revenue for the embattled music industry outside of download sales.

The statement, made by YouTube VP of content Tom Pickett, came in answer to a question during a panel discussion at Midem in Cannes, France, about how much value Google as a technology platform places on music and whether artists are making meaningful money by
being on the platform. YouTube had earlier stated that it has paid "hundreds of millions of dollars" to the music industry.
"We are very much into music," Pickett said, adding later that, "If you think about it, we’ve paid out to the music industry over the last several years over $1 billion. So there is money being generated in this ad-supported model. It is going to artists."

Pickett pointed out that the money YouTube pays out goes to "thousands and thousands" of musicians and rights holders, addressing the complaint that some individual artists may not see large checks because the per-view payment is relatively small.Jordan Berliant, a panel member and head of music management at The Collective Music Group which represents Linkin Park, Stone Temple Pilots and Staind, added that YouTube "can be a place to make money," but that, "It’s not a place to make money right now." Berliant added that he doesn't blame YouTube, whose business model relies largely on advertising, which in turn relies on having a massive audience.

The session got testy when panelist Geoff Taylor, the chief executive of BPI and the BRIT Awards, referred the revenue his artists receive from YouTube and other ad-supported music streaming services as "pennies and pence," when compared to paid streaming services such as Spotify's premium tier and Deezer. Taylor said he hoped YouTube will develop a "mixed model" that also includes a paid subscription service.YouTube already has the necessary music licenses to launch a paid subscription music streaming product and is expected to launch its service sometime this year.Taylor took another shot at Google towards the end of the session, accusing the search giant of doing little to remove links to illegal sites that distribute pirated music or sell software that can be used to record music videos on YouTube, Vevo and elsewhere.

"When you know that stuff is illegal, you surely have got the responsibility to take that knowledge into account and do something with your search rankings, which gives the legal sites a chance to put themselves in front of consumers rather than the pirate sites," Taylor said. "To have a really productive partnership, Google and YouTube need to do more on that."Pickett was not given a chance to respond during the panel, which can be viewed in its entirety on YouTube.

Beyonce Might Perform at Michelle Obama’s 50th B’day Bash

Posted by Unknown Senin, 20 Januari 2014 0 komentar

Michelle Obama turned 50 on Friday and "Her husband has been spending a lot of time and energy planning it," Valerie Jarrett, a senior White House adviser who is close to the Obamas, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "He's so excited and he wants to make sure that the celebration that she began in Hawaii continues through the weekend."

The first lady said last month she wasn't certain how she would celebrate but that whatever she did might involve dancing "a little Dougie."

Jarrett wouldn't comment on reports that Beyonce, who also is close to the Obamas, will sing at the party. That her husband, rapper and entrepreneur Jay Z, performed at the Verizon Center in Washington on Thursday night, added to the speculation.

Disneys Frozen Soundtrack hits No 1 on Billboard 200

'Frozen' Soundtrack Storms to Top Of Billboard 200

"Frozen" is the fourth animated film soundtrack to reach No. 1 in the chart's 58-year history.

The soundtrack to Disney's "Frozen" blows into the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200, selling 165,000 copies in the week ending Jan. 5, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It rises from No. 4 last week and earns a 55% gain in sales.

"Frozen" marks the first soundtrack to reach No. 1 in a year, since "Les Misérables" rose to No. 1 on the Jan. 19, 2013, chart. (That chart reflected the sales week that ended Jan. 6, mirroring how this week's chart reflects the week ending Jan. 5, 2014.)

"Frozen" bumps Beyoncé's self-titled album from the No. 1 position, down to No. 2 in its fourth chart week, with 130,000 (down 58%). "Beyoncé" spent its first three weeks at No. 1, and has now sold 1.43 million. This week, total sales for the album also surpass that of the diva's previous album, "4," which was released in 2011 and has sold 1.39 million.

"Frozen" is just the fourth animated film soundtrack to reach No. 1 since the Billboard 200 became a regularly published weekly chart in 1956. It follows Jack Johnson's "Curious George" (2006), and Disney's "Pocahontas" (1995) and "The Lion King" (1994).

    ArtPop app by Lady Gaga

Posted by Unknown Senin, 09 Desember 2013 0 komentar

With the release of Lady Gaga’s third studio album “ARTPOP,” Gaga and her TechHaus team have built an intriguing companion app.

The "ARTPOP" app is centralized around the idea of “the auras,” which is the community of users within the app. Named after “Aura,” the first track on the album, each user has a personal profile that they develop while using the app. Think of it as an overall presence of your activity, accessed by tapping on the glowing orb at the bottom of the main menu, which will reveal your activity scattered across the screen.

Unfortunately, only the “ARTPOP” and “ArtHaus” sections of the app are available right now, with two unknown features set to unlock in April 2014. It is possible that Gaga will release additional songs through the app at that time, which would definitely give it more of a purpose.

The "ARTPOP" section is, of course, the album itself. Simply, it is a music player automatically imports the songs from the album that you have purchased from iTunes. Your play history will then become part of your aura.

The next area of the app that is unlocked as of its release is the ArtHaus studio. This is where you will be able to make unique GIF images, which are based on a moving objects with a background of your choice. There is also an area where users can view which images have been seen by Gaga, which is pretty cool.

From anywhere within the app, an edge gesture from the left side of the display will reveal a panel. In here, you can quickly control the playback of music, as well as participate in chat rooms through LittleMonsters.com.

The app is free in the Apple App Store, and the album is available for $14.99.

On Sunday, November 3, the first ever YouTube Music Awards will be held and will stream online LIVE in New York City. The voting will be done by the public, and it begins today!

The YouTube Music Awards is a show where your votes do make a difference, unlike other awards shows. However, the whole concept is that it’s a popularity contest, and the most popular artists/videos will be the ones to win the awards, whether or not you, personally, might also be someone who likes a particular artist/video.

Categories for the YouTube Music Awards include Innovation of the Year, YouTube Phenomenon, Response of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Artist of the Year and Video of the Year.
The YouTube Phenomenon and Response of the Year award are based on videos that fans create. The latter of these awards will go to the best fan parody, remix, or response video to a video of a music artist. The YouTube Phenomenon award is one given to trends that were pretty much unavoidable, and which generated the most overall fan videos, like “Gangnam Style,” “Harlem Shake” and “Diamonds.”

The Innovation of the Year award will go to the most outstanding creative/innovative video created the past year. The nominations for this award came from an international panel of YouTubers, musicians, and creative types, in general.

The Breakthrough Artist of the Year award is packed with a lot of very talented musician and singers, all who have experience a lot of growth in subscribers and views this past year. Nominees are Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar, Rudimental, Naughty Boy and Passenger.

The Artist of the Year award goes to the most shared, subscribed, liked, and watched artist/video of the year. Perhaps the biggest award of the YouTube Music Awards will be the one for Video of the Year. The nominees represent the most loved, shared, and watched videos of the year.

Phenomenon of the year nominees include:
    • Diamonds by Rihanna,
    • Harlem Shake by Original Army Edition,

    • DeStorm’s “See Me Standing,” and

Artist of the year nominees include:
    • PSY,
    • Katy Perry,
    • Justin Bieber,
    • Eminem,
    • Taylor Swift,
    • Nicki Minaj,
    • Macklemore & Ryan Lewis,
    • One Direction,
    •  Rihanna and the Epic Rap Battles of History.
Video of the year nominees include:
    • Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack,”
    • “Same Love” by Macklemore and Lewis featuring Mary Lambert,
    • “I Got a Boy” by Girls’ Generation, “Applause” by Lady Gaga,
    • Justin Bieber’s “Beauty and a Beat” (which also features Nicki Monaj),
    • “Gentlemen” by PSY,
    • “Come and Get It” by Selena Gomez,
    • “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus and
    • “Best Song Ever” by One Direction.

The YouTube Music Awards is basically a celebration of music videos, and which artists are the most watched and most liked in each category. Like the MTV VMAs, not everyone will enjoy watching the YouTube Music Award show, but for a different reason — not because viewers of the videos might be offended, but because the videos play to a relatively mainstream audience.
